Tongyeong International Music Festival 2011, which emerged as one of the best classical music festivals in Asia, will officially be held from Saturday, March 26, until Friday, April 1 in Tongyeong City. This year’s festival, which celebrates its tenth season, is more significant because Alexander Liebreich, the first foreign Artistic Director in the history of TIMF, will officially begin his service. The theme “Moving Dimension”, which Liebreich himself named, comes from “Dimensionen”, which Isang Yun(1917-1995) composed in 1971. It also clearly reveals the new director’s intentions to enhance the festival’s reputation to higher level worldwide through sensitive and diversified programs.

 
TIMF 2011 will begin with a performance by the Salzburg Mozarteum Orchestra. They will attract audiences with a broad spectrum of repertoires, ranging from Bach to Isang Yun on March 26 and 28. 
 
The Asian premieres (on March 31 and April 1) of , a musical theatrical play by renowned German stage director and composer Heiner Goebbels, who will visit Korea for the first time, adds more meaning to the festival. All stage sets will be delivered from Lausanne, Switzerland, itself, which will enable audiences to enjoy the styles of avant-garde stage production of the mainland (Switzerland) to the full.
 
However, what is especially significant is that TIMF will introduce its ‘Artists-in-Residence’ system this year for the first time. Among the musicians who were selected for TIMF 2011 include Unsuk Chin and Heiner Goebbels, representative composers of East and West, Soprano Yeree Suh and Russian Pianist Igor Levit, who actively concertize around the world. 
 
Additionally, TIMF has prepared performances for child audiences. For example, ‘Nightingale’, a tale based on a nightingale’s which possesses a beautiful voice unchanging love for an emperor, will be presented in music along with explanations. It is the artistic director’s attempt to expand the functions for music education. The festival will also hold a discussion by leading artists of this era: Artistic Director Alexander Liebreich and two composers-in-residence Unsuk Chin and Heiner Goebbels will all gather together to share their thoughts on music, and this rare opportunity will undoubtedly prove indispensable for those fortunate to be in attendance.
 
On March 27, Youn Sun Nah, an internationally acclaimed jazz vocalist will present . On the same date, an Australian percussion group which stimulates emotions with its creativity will appear for to pay a tribute to Steve Reich, a living minimalist composer. On March 29, a British vocal a cappella quartet called will appear, and the Kuss Quartet, a German string quartet comprised of young musicians, will perform two days later, on March 31. The festival will conclude with by TIMF Ensemble with Kwangchul Youn, a bass singer with a dignified and gentle voice.
 
The TIMF Fringe, which collaborated with approximately 800 teams for the last nine years with a burning passion for music, will meet its audiences again. TIMF Fringe 2011 will see 161 teams who awaits enthusiastic crowd, and they will touch listeners’ hearts with energetic performances.
